“Feeding Tubes fill stomachs, but sharing meals fills hearts”
If you’re a clinician or someone experienced in nasogastric tube feeding and you are looking for a framework to help you teach others … this is the right place!
SUCCEED has three types of resources for you, all freely available for you to use whenever and wherever you would like:
- The SUCCEED Gold Standard Approach
This peer-reviewed, research-driven approach to “one safe way to give a meal via nasogastric tube” aims to standardise the language and steps we all use in tube feeding. If a family’s main hospital, local hospital, community clinicians and Children’s Ward all use these steps and words it makes tube meals far less confusing for everyone.
You can read the research paper in the Journal of Paediatrics and Child Health for free by clicking here. - A one-hour course for experienced participants
For anyone who knows how to give a meal via a tube and who is interested in what makes the SUCCEED approach unique there is a one-hour demonstration. This briefly introduces the principles of a Gold Standard nasogastric tube meal, demonstrates the approach with a mannequin and invites participants to try this approach themselves.
For this course the Clinician Handbook is a great companion resources to give out. - A two-hour course for inexperienced participants (max 8-10 with two instructors)
Directions on how to host the full SUCCEED two-hour course for inexperienced participants including notes on goals, equipment, room set-up, timetabling and troubleshooting are all freely available below.
Please reach out to us by clicking here if you would like to run a course or have already done so! We love to know who is using the course and how. It is freely available to you at no cost, for any purpose, including if you charge people to attend your course.
SUCCEED is a not-for-profit organisation and we will continue to update the course materials and share them freely as practices change.
Instructing on a SUCCEED Course
Our Tube Feeding Course aims to be:
- Practical
Participants leave empowered with the foundation of practical skills they can confidently apply
- Safe
The course is always guided by clinical expertise and family lived experience
- Transformative
It helps families get close to thriving while tube feeding, and sets the stage for either happy long-term tube feeding OR safe efficient tube weaning when appropriate
The course combines explicit teaching on one safe way to give a gravity-fed NGT feed with messages about the value and importance of mealtimes as a way to connect, play and enjoy with feeding.
“The SUCCEED vision is to have experienced carers and clinicians demonstrating that it is possible to be safe and have fun while tube feeding a child”
We have designed two versions of this course
- A 2-hour complete course for carers with no experience in tube feeding. By the end of this course participants will have been observed to complete a nasogastric, gravity tube feed according to the gold standard.
- A 1-hour introduction to the SUCCEED Approach to Tube Feeding, aimed at clinicians and other professionals who have existing knowledge of tube feeding and who want to learn the SUCCEED method.
